Detroit Public Schools Program Management

The Detroit Public School District (DPS) serves 167,000 students in 263 schools.  The school facilities average 61 years of age and have had minimal maintenance. CTE is part of the DPS Program Manager Team for the system's $1.4 billion construction and rehabilitation effort over five years. The majority of the work is for 69 new schools, including 50 new elementary schools, additions and major renovations.  As the environmental manager for all projects handled by the DPS program management team, CTE's responsibilities include site assessments for new schools to address any existing environmental issues before the school is built. CTE also oversees asbestos and lead removal for renovation and demolition projects. CTE developed specifications and a selection process for specialty consultants and contractors, and is responsible for retaining and managing the 10-15 environmental and industrial hygiene consultants and asbestos abatement contractors who do this work. CTE also coordinates and presents at meetings with community members and elected or appointed officials who are involved in school site issues.
