Williamsburg Bridge Reconstruction
For almost a decade, CTE has provided construction supervision services for the reconstruction of the Williamsburg Bridge. This multi-phase project incorporated four separate contracts and required interaction with numerous agencies and contractors including the US Coast Guard, NYSDOT, NYSDEC, NYC Transit, NYC Parks Department, NYCDOT-OCMC, and NYCDEP. The project included the replacement of both the Manhattan and Brooklyn approach viaducts consisting of multiple steel bents which support the north and south inner and outer roadways. New electric feeders and electric service buildings for the bridge were installed in Brooklyn and Manhattan providing new electric service for the entire bridge. Also included was a traffic management system (TMS) utilizing variable message signs (VMS), closed-circuit television (CCTV) monitoring, and additional signs linked by fiber-optic cable to the NYC Department of Transportation Traffic Control Center.
CTE also provided construction supervision services for the replacement of the existing New York City Transit structure for the BMT subway on the bridge. Project work included: demolition of the existing transit trestle on the Manhattan and Brooklyn approaches and replacement with new steel pier caps and track stringers; replacement of track stringers and strengthening of BMT floor beams on the main bridge; placement of new trackwork; installation and testing of new signal, communications and traction power systems; construction of new central instrument rooms at the Essex Street Station and the Manhattan and Brooklyn anchorages; installation of north roadway interim lighting; demolition of the existing north footwall on the approaches; removal of asbestos containing materials from existing transit systems and painting of the main bridge overhead truss, north transit hanger and anchorage steel. This project received the Concrete Industry Board, Inc.'s 1997 Award of Merit and the New York Building Congress' and New York Construction News 1997 Highway/Bridge/Heavy Construction Project of the Year.
